Printable Transportation Flashcards. Part 1.

Having published the blog post about the transport song, I decided I would start sharing my collection of 700+ English flashcards with those dedicated to the transportation topic. And soon, to follow the trend, I will create a set of printable games and worksheets for educators to help students memorize and consolidate the transportation vocabulary.

ESL Christmas Bingo Game

I have designed printable 5-by-5 grid cards for the Christmas bingo game that ESL teachers can use to help students consolidate the vocabulary introduced with my Christmas flashcards. This is my second favorite game after dominoes that I often play with kids I teach English to. Bingo is definitely the number one game by how much fun and excitement it can bring to the classroom.

The Christmas bingo rules are similar to those of traditional bingo. But instead of numbers there are pictures corresponding to words that kids have already learned with the help of my Christmas flashcards, crossword and word search puzzles, word and picture matching worksheets and dominoes game. Just as traditional cards my Christmas bingo card has a free space in the center. The teacher acts as an announcer calling out random words from small word cards that published bellow in this post. Those cards contain 46 English nouns from the Christmas vocabulary. There are a few additional words for synonyms (e.g., Christmas ball - Christmas bauble, gift - present, decoration - ornaments) and British variations of the word “sweater” (pullover, jumper). The goal is to fill a horizontal, vertical or diagonal pattern of five grid spaces on the card. Kids can either use a marker or chips (also published below) to mark the spaces that match the word called out by the teacher. Players can agree to continue playing until someone covers all the pictures on a card (full house).

Then kids can carry out some tasks of Christmas worksheets I designed for my ESL Christmas kit. Those tasks include crosswords and word search puzzles, word-to-picture and picture-to-word matching. Those worksheets are based on the words featured on this Christmas flashcards set. The final step to consolidate the relevant English vocabulary is playing my Christmas games: dominoes and bingo.

Printable Christmas Dominoes. Part 1.

In this post I’d like to share my printable Christmas dominoes. Playing games is one of the most effective methods of teaching English to kids. I love playing games with my young students. They helps me engage even shy and weak student into the language learning process. Games create a relaxing and fun atmosphere during the class. Moreover games are a natural way of cognition for little kids. That’s why they seem to better memorize words whenever we play my printable vocabulary games during our English classes.

One of my favorite games is dominoes. It’s a game with rather simple rules which develops such skills as recognizing the relevant vocabulary by meaning and spelling of words. I try to design dominoes for each major topic I teach to kids during the year.

No doubt, Christmas is one of the biggest holidays in the world, so ESL teachers should dedicate some lessons to Christmas traditions and the winter season. Therefore dominoes make a part of my Christmas kit that I use to introduce the holiday vocabulary to kids. The Christmas dominoes feature the same pictures I used to design my Christmas flashcards. So dominoes can be used along with flashcards as another visual stimulus conducive to memorizing Christmas-related words.

ESL teachers are welcome to make use of my Christmas dominoes too. Please, share your experience in the comment section below.

Transport Song for Children

Today I would like to share my new Transport song for children. This song helps young learners memorize means of transport and have some fun while learning English.

Transport Song Lyrics
Verse 1
How can we get to Paris?
How can we get to Rome?
So many means of transport,
So many ways to go.

Chorus
We can drive a car
No matter how far

We can fly a plane
As fast as a hurricane

We can go by train
Along a railway

We can take a bus
It’s so good for us

We can ride a bike
It's something all kids like

We can sail a boat
On sea in place of a road.

Verse 2
No matter how we travel
By train, plane, car or boat,
By bus, bike or whatever
We'll see the whole world!

When designing English-French flashcards, I also thought about educators who might want to use this visual teaching material to teach French to English speakers. That is why I have designed flashcards in three different colors depending on the gender of French words: red for feminine French nouns, blue for masculine French nouns and magenta for French nouns that can be both feminine and masculine (e.g., professions).

Collocations Worksheets: Verb "Have"

In today’s article I would like to share the first part of my new collection of English collocations. First of all it should be defined the meaning of this concept.

A collocation is a common word combination of two or more words that usually go together in a way that sounds correct. Understanding this helps English learners improve their fluency and speak more natural. The meaning of a collocation might not be expected from the meaning of its separate words therefore it is extremely important to learn the meaning of some groups of words you can come across frequently.

This post introduces common collocations with the verb have. Below you can find the list of these collocations.

Vocabulary Building Worksheets: Three-Letter Noun Crosswords

It is impossible to teach English without classifying vocabulary into groups of words by topic, part of speech, spelling rules and whatnot. By doing so, ESL teachers introduce small and digestible chunks of vocabulary that students can easily remember and use in their communication. I’d like to share an idea of introducing some of easy three-letter nouns to kids in order to help them build and expand their active vocabulary from early years of studying English.

I have created a series of vocabulary building worksheets featuring as many as 80 three-letter nouns. These English words are small and simple enough even for beginners to remember them in no time. The nouns I introduce are also frequently used ones, so, when memorized, they will constitute a solid part of students’ active vocabulary.

The list of three-letter nouns featured in my worksheets includes the following words: ant, ape, arm, art, axe, bag, bat, bed, bee, bib, bow, box, boy, bug, bus, can, cap, car, cat, cow, cup, dog, dot, ear, egg, eye, fan, fin, fly, fox, hat, hay, hen, hut, ice, ink, jam, jar, jet, jug, key, leg, lip, log, man, map, mat, mop, mug, net, nut, oil, owl, pan, paw, pea, pen, pet, pie, pig, pin, pot, ram, rat, rod, saw, sea, sun, tap, tea, tie, toe, top, toy, van, vet, web, wig, yak, zoo.

I have designed the set of printable worksheets that helps students memorize the three-letter words through a variety of assignments including crossword puzzles, word search puzzles, word to picture matching and others.

With this blog post I’m starting to publish the series of vocabulary building worksheets, flashcards and games I use to teach English to kids. I hope ESL teachers from all over the world will find my teaching materials good enough to be used for their English classes too. The first post dedicated to vocabulary building exercises features three-letter nouns crossword puzzles.

English Spanish Flashcards

An ESL teacher from Mexico sent me a message once asking whether I was interested in making English-Spanish flashcards to help educators in Spanish-speaking countries teach English to kids. Being an ESL teacher myself, I loved the idea of bilingual flashcards. So I decided to create a series of printable bilingual flashcards starting with the English-Spanish ones as a tribute to the Mexican teacher who gave me this wonderful idea.

Spanish is a great language to focus on when starting my cause of creating bilingual ESL materials for teachers all over the world. It is estimated that there are some 480 millions of native Spanish speakers which makes Spanish the world’s second most spoken native language. The geography and economic connections of the majority of Spanish-speaking countries dictate make learning English a strategic necessity for their population as their English-speaking neighbors are their major trading partners and sources of tourists. In many cases the ability to speak English can be vital for people’s career in such countries as Mexico. The United States is Mexico’s biggest trading partner buying almost 80% of total Mexican exports. The number 2 trading partner is another English-speaking country — Canada. The USA is the top trading partner also for Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala and some other Hispanic countries of Latin America.

Phonics Flashcards (Consonants Bb, Cc and Ff)

My printable phonics flashcards proved to be quite popular among ESL teachers from all over the world. No wonder. English is considered to be a tough language to read. There are too many exceptions to spelling and pronunciation rules, so lots of kids who study English as their second language find it challenging to learn reading in English. My phonics flashcards are designed to point out some spelling patterns and corresponding sounds. These cards are helpful both for teachers and students as they present some example words that should be introduced to students to help them understand how the same letters can make different sounds in English words depending on their place in the word and the adjacent letters. All the words presented in the flashcards are easy to read and memorize as I have selected some of the most frequently used ones for each case.

Till today I had only completed flashcards for vowel sounds, however I took some time to work on consonant phonics too, so a set of English consonant flashcards is ready now. There are 124 flashcards in the consonant set. I’ll be posting all of them here in my blog over the time. If you need them right now, you are welcome to purchase them in a printer-friendly PDF document. The document has high resolution flashcards images for easy and high quality printing. Just follow the links above to make a purchase in my store.

In today’s post I’d like to show you the first 28 consonant phonics flashcards.

Irregular Verbs Puzzle Flashcards (Part 1)

Today I have a wonderful opportunity to share my new set of irregular verbs puzzle flashcards with fellow teachers and parents. Everybody knows all English verbs can be divided into two groups: regular and irregular. Past Simple and Past Participle forms of the regular verbs are built by adding -ed to the main form. Irregular verbs aren’t formed according to this general rule. There’s no rule of building them at all. Children should just remember these forms by heart.

The kit has 105 irregular verbs puzzle flashcards

Teaching irregular verbs to ESL students can be a rather challenging task. There are many types of activities a teacher can use while introducing this grammar topic to children. Based on my experience, I’ve designed a colorful set of irregular verbs flashcards in the form of puzzles as an interesting way of practicing irregular verbs while playing. Each puzzle contains an image illustrating an irregular verb. Then there are three pieces with the Infinitive, Past Simple and Past Participle forms of the verb. Below you can see some examples of using these forms in sentences. I used only such tenses as Present Simple, Past Simple and Present Perfect so that kids could focus on these irregular forms without getting lost in the complicated system of English tenses and structures.

Printable Sight Words Flashcards

Reading is a cornerstone skill for learning languages. However, teaching to read in a foreign language is a very complicated task for educators, and especially for those who work with little kids. It may seem like children struggle with reading even in their native language, let alone in English which they study as their second language. But, fortunately, most kids absorb languages very quickly as they frequently do at their age. It is the way their brains function as they start to discover the world around them. So many ESL teachers apply tried and true methods of teaching kids to read used by native language speakers. One of such methods is whole word method based on so-called sight words.

BUY MY PRINTABLE SIGHT WORDS FLASHCARDS IN A PRINTER-FRIENDLY PDF FILE
The kit has more than 550 Dolch sight word cards (including 95 image cards for nouns as well as cards featuring verbs in different forms)

The method implies memorizing high frequency words (sight words) as a whole by sight. Kids memorize how words look and thus learn to automatically recognize them in texts. It is especially useful for words with non-standard spelling patterns such as “was” or “come”.

List of sight words (Dolch words) introduced in the first grade

One of the most popular lists of sight words was created by Edward William Dolch in 1938. He picked out 220 high frequency words from children’s books of his era. Those words should be easily recognized by kids for a better start to learning to read. They say that Dolch sight words cover from 50% to 75% of all words used in library books, school books and newspapers. It looks like a solid base for kids who learn to read in English as foreign language.

Color Coded Sight Words Flashcards

I tried to use sight words flashcards that I could find and download online. But the problem is that they all looked too dry and plain. Working with them is far from being fun for kids. So I decided to create my own set of printable sight words flashcards with the following benefits:

  • Attracting attention due to an unusual shape of cards
  • Color coded flashcards to help kids learn word order in English sentences
  • Sight word nouns with corresponding image flashcards
  • Interactivity and gamification

Matching Words to Numbers Flashcards

English numbers and counting are some of the earliest topics introduced to kids by ESL teachers.

I have created a set of printable flashcards for fellow English teachers to use when teaching numbers. These flashcards will help make English classes more fun for kids and gamify a little bit their learning experience. Cards like these create a challenge. And a challenge is a well-known catalyst for memorizing words.

printable English numbers flashcards

Each flashcard consists of two detachable parts. The upper part has a number in digits, and the lower part has the same number in words. Children are supposed to match the two parts and connect them into a single card.

There are flashcards with numbers 1 - 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100.

Letter A Worksheets, Flash Cards, Coloring Pages

My blog is getting bigger as I add more worksheets, flash cards, coloring pages and other ESL materials. I'm sure my fellow English teachers have a hard time finding and discovering new stuff on this blog. So I decided to make it easier for them to discover useful things on my blog by creating separate posts dedicated to English letters. In this first post I'll start sharing my printable worksheets, flashcards and whatnot designed to introduce letter A to kids.
