ESL Christmas Bingo Game

I have designed printable 5-by-5 grid cards for the Christmas bingo game that ESL teachers can use to help students consolidate the vocabulary introduced with my Christmas flashcards. This is my second favorite game after dominoes that I often play with kids I teach English to. Bingo is definitely the number one game by how much fun and excitement it can bring to the classroom.

The Christmas bingo rules are similar to those of traditional bingo. But instead of numbers there are pictures corresponding to words that kids have already learned with the help of my Christmas flashcards, crossword and word search puzzles, word and picture matching worksheets and dominoes game. Just as traditional cards my Christmas bingo card has a free space in the center. The teacher acts as an announcer calling out random words from small word cards that published bellow in this post. Those cards contain 46 English nouns from the Christmas vocabulary. There are a few additional words for synonyms (e.g., Christmas ball - Christmas bauble, gift - present, decoration - ornaments) and British variations of the word “sweater” (pullover, jumper). The goal is to fill a horizontal, vertical or diagonal pattern of five grid spaces on the card. Kids can either use a marker or chips (also published below) to mark the spaces that match the word called out by the teacher. Players can agree to continue playing until someone covers all the pictures on a card (full house).

Then kids can carry out some tasks of Christmas worksheets I designed for my ESL Christmas kit. Those tasks include crosswords and word search puzzles, word-to-picture and picture-to-word matching. Those worksheets are based on the words featured on this Christmas flashcards set. The final step to consolidate the relevant English vocabulary is playing my Christmas games: dominoes and bingo.

Printable Christmas Dominoes. Part 1.

In this post I’d like to share my printable Christmas dominoes. Playing games is one of the most effective methods of teaching English to kids. I love playing games with my young students. They helps me engage even shy and weak student into the language learning process. Games create a relaxing and fun atmosphere during the class. Moreover games are a natural way of cognition for little kids. That’s why they seem to better memorize words whenever we play my printable vocabulary games during our English classes.

One of my favorite games is dominoes. It’s a game with rather simple rules which develops such skills as recognizing the relevant vocabulary by meaning and spelling of words. I try to design dominoes for each major topic I teach to kids during the year.

No doubt, Christmas is one of the biggest holidays in the world, so ESL teachers should dedicate some lessons to Christmas traditions and the winter season. Therefore dominoes make a part of my Christmas kit that I use to introduce the holiday vocabulary to kids. The Christmas dominoes feature the same pictures I used to design my Christmas flashcards. So dominoes can be used along with flashcards as another visual stimulus conducive to memorizing Christmas-related words.

ESL teachers are welcome to make use of my Christmas dominoes too. Please, share your experience in the comment section below.

Transport Song for Children

Today I would like to share my new Transport song for children. This song helps young learners memorize means of transport and have some fun while learning English.

Transport Song Lyrics
Verse 1
How can we get to Paris?
How can we get to Rome?
So many means of transport,
So many ways to go.

Chorus
We can drive a car
No matter how far

We can fly a plane
As fast as a hurricane

We can go by train
Along a railway

We can take a bus
It’s so good for us

We can ride a bike
It's something all kids like

We can sail a boat
On sea in place of a road.

Verse 2
No matter how we travel
By train, plane, car or boat,
By bus, bike or whatever
We'll see the whole world!
