Halloween Bingo

Happy Halloween, everyone!!! It's the last day of the Halloween season and I'd like to show you the last printable resource related to the holiday that have not yet shared on this blog. It is the printable bingo game.

The Halloween kit this bingo game belongs to includes 15 printable bingo cards. So it is enough to organize a fun bingo game with a relatively large group of kids. My students love this kind of games. Activities like this are great for memorizing the vocabulary. As a rule, I use the bingo and domino games at the end of the period I dedicate to Halloween in order to revise and strengthen what student have learned.

Printable Halloween Dominoes. Part 1.

It's one day before Halloween and I keep on sharing my printable worksheets, flashcards and games that I have designed to use for my English classes dedicated to this holiday. Today's post is about my Halloween dominoes. The domino cards feature the same pictures as the Halloween flashcards so teachers can use them to strengthen the Halloween materials that students have been learning during the holiday period.

The domino game is a part of my printable Halloween kit that contains another game ― Halloween bingo. The kit helps me turn the Halloween season into a fun and productive learning process that helps my students memorize the Halloween vocabulary.

Printable Flashcards: Animals and Their Babies. Part 1.

In my previous blog post dedicated to a reading comprehension passage that features a cow and her calf, I mentioned once again that I created 40 printable flashcards to use for teaching kids some English names of young animals. These 40 flashcards make a part of a big set of more than 280 animal-related flashcards that accompany 11 reading comprehension passages. All these flashcards and worksheets constitute a reading comprehension kit.

So it’s time to start sharing some of my printable flashcards with my fellow EFL and ESL teachers. I hope these colorful resources will be useful when introducing names of baby animals to elementary school students. The whole set of cards features the following animals and their young ones: bat ― pup, bear ― cub, bee ― larva, bird ― nestling, butterfly ― caterpillar, cat ― kitten, chicken ― chick, chimpanzee ― infant, cow ― calf, deer ― fawn, dog ― puppy, donkey ― foal/colt, duck ― duckling, echidna ― puggle, elephant ― calf, fox ― pup/cub/kit, frog ― tadpole, goat ― kit, goose ― gosling, gorilla ― infant/baby, hare ― leveret, hen ― chick, hippo ― calf, horse ― foal, kangaroo ― joey, lion ― cub, monkey ― infant, mouse ― pup/pinky, owl ― owlet, panda ― cub, pig ― piglet, rabbit ― kitten/kit/bunny, rat ― pup, rhino ― calf, sheep ― lamb, snake ― snakelet, swan ― cygnet, tiger ― cub, turtle ― hatchling, zebra ― colt/foal.

Printable Flashcards: Animal Sounds. Part 1.

In my recent blog posts about my reading comprehension kit dedicated to animals I mentioned that I had created more than 280 printable flashcards to help elementary school students expand their English vocabulary for the topic of animals along with developing their reading fluency. And since a few of the reading passages have vocabulary related to sounds of animals, I could not help including some relevant flashcards to the set. So I have designed 39 animal sounds flashcards and I'm starting to share some of them with my fellow ESL and EFL teachers.

Reading Comprehension Worksheets: Anna the Cow

This is the second printable reading comprehension passage from my animal-related reading comprehension kit that I share on my blog. As usual the worksheets incorporate the short text about an animal (this time it's a cow) followed by questions and tasks such as true or false statements. The second worksheet is the same passage with some nouns replaced with pictures. The reading comprehension passage goes as follows:

Anna is a cow. She lives on a farm with her family. She is a mother to a cute calf. Anna’s husband is a big and strong bull. Anna eats grass and gives milk. When she is not too busy, she spends time with other animals that live on the farm. Her best friends are horses, sheep, and goats.

Printable Colors Flashcards. Part 1.

I have designed a set of printable colors flashcards as a part of my reading comprehension kit dedicated to animals. Since a few of the comprehension passages mention some animal colors (e.g., the passage about a black cat), I though it would be great for a teacher to use the flashcards to help students learn or repeat the English colors vocabulary.

These colors flashcards are only a small fraction the animal reading comprehension kit. The kit includes 11 short passages and related worksheets as well as more than 280 printable flashcards designed to teach English vocabulary related to animals: animal body parts, animal homes and habitats, animal actions, animals and their babies, colors.

Reading Comprehension Worksheets: Thomas the Cat

I begin publishing some of my printable reading comprehension worksheets dedicated to animals. I’d like to start with a comprehension passage about a black cat named Tom. The passage goes like this:

Tom is a black cat. He lives in a house. He drinks milk and eats cat food. His master gives him fish sometimes. After each meal he licks himself to clean his fur. Tom is a little cat, and his master calls him kitten. Tom loves to play with a ball of yarn. He pretends to see a rat, he runs to catch it. He meows when he is hungry and purrs when he feels happy. Tom is a happy cat and he purrs a lot.

Reading Fluency and Comprehension: Verb “Have”

Being a teacher that works with kids who learn English as a foreign language, I understood long ago that my students struggle to use the verb “have” with the third-person nouns and pronouns correctly. Since being able to use the verb “have” is extremely important for language fluency, it is one of the first words to be introduced to kids. So children have to use the verb “have” from the very outset of studying English. All too often non-native English speakers learn how to conjugate the verb “have” in elementary school or even kindergarten. Therefore I have designed a small collection of printable reading fluency and comprehension sentence strip pages to encourage kids to learn how to use the verb “have” with different nouns and pronouns.

My elementary school reading comprehension sentences include some vocabulary related to pets, farm animals and toys. So my strip pages can be used to help early readers and special education children learn and memorize some useful English words along with basic grammar rules. I have designed these reading comprehension worksheets in such a way that they would look vibrant and appealing to small kids. I’m sure that cute pictures and bright colors of this resource will make even the struggling readers enjoy their reading fluency practice. My fellow ESL and EFL teachers are welcome to download the hi-res PDF file with all the sentence strips to use them for their English classes too.

Reading Comprehension Kit. Animal Passages. Grades 1-3

At last, I have completed this massive set of printable reading comprehension worksheets and accompanying flashcards that I designed to improve reading skills of my elementary school students and help them expand their animals vocabulary. I was taught to create large sets of visually attractive printable EFL and ESL materials by the strong competition among English teachers in my city. Being a modest private English tutor, I have to compete with businesses that employ multiple EFL teachers for large groups of students. They have much bigger advertising budgets and opportunities than I do. Therefore offering the best and the brightest teaching materials is my tried and true way to attract students and their parents who eventually hire me to teach English to their kids. The new reading comprehension kit is this special kind of printables I can proudly use for my classes and make kids fall in love with learning English.

Yes, I use reading comprehension worksheets that I can get on the Internet. They are somewhat good for children who start learning to read in English. But eventually kids get bored with them. Those worksheets seem to be too bland for today’s children who are accustomed to more vibrant content they can freely access online. So I decided to make my own experimental reading comprehension worksheets with more colors and less straightforward tasks. I used more vibrant and funny images along with some questions that require a little bit of thinking beyond what is written in the comprehension passages.
