As I wrote in one of my previous blog posts, I had created a printable classroom calendar that features American holidays and celebrations. This calendar helps me plan my English classes. So here are some lesson ideas for September based on the calendar.

The biggest American holiday of September for students to learn about is, of course, Labor Day. I have designed the entire set of Labor Day printables that include reading comprehension passages, worksheets, flashcards and posters. Those printables are good for learning English vocabulary related to jobs and tools.

On the Read a Book Day a teacher can discuss students’ favorite books or ask them to read one of great children’s books by the end of the month and then discuss it. When working with younger students, I usually start reading “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” book on this day. I have a bunch of the very hungry caterpillar worksheets and activities that help me teach some relevant vocabulary based on the book.

Grandparents Day is when teachers can talk with students about their granddads and grandmas. Kids can tell what their grandparents’ names are, what they like to do, what their favorite food is, what kind of presents their grandparents gave them last Christmas etc.
The National Cooking Day offers another big topic to learn and discuss in the classroom. Students can tell the class what their favorite dishes are and what kind of ingredients are needed to make them. I’ll be using my printable food and drinks worksheets, food flashcards, food and drinks dominoes, food and drinks bingo game, search puzzles and crossword puzzles as well as food and cooking reading comprehension worksheets for my classes dedicated to the National Cooking Day.

On World Tourist Day kids can learn some relevant English words using my printable city vocabulary posters as visual aid. The teacher and students can discuss what one can see when traveling to different cities. Kids can also learn and sing this transport song.
